My Creator Calling: A Poem from Hope Rising 365 by Meg Cannon
We are pleased to share a beautiful excerpt from Hope Rising 365 by Meg Cannon, an encouraging daily devotional for young Christian women.
Hope Rising 365 is full of stories, reflections, poems, Bible verses, and wise words some truly inspiring people. Meg writes:
“Whether you read this book from cover to cover or whether you dip in and out of it, I hope it will make you laugh, challenge your thinking and, ultimately, enable you to discover the incredible joy and hope found in God.”
We hope you enjoy this poem about how when all we can offer God is our weakness, God joyfully pursues us with his love.
Part 1
There have been times when I’ve felt like I’m in a tunnel,
And it’s dark and I can’t see ahead.
And I’m not getting out of this tunnel,
So I stop and I sit down instead.
And slowly I get used to this darkness,
It’s just how my life will be from now on.
No happiness here in the tunnel,
No breeze, no sunrise, no birdsong.
And all I feel is isolation,
I’m here alone as the tears fall down
My tearstained cheeks have been stained for weeks,
In my tears I’ve wished I could drown.
But in the distance I hear a voice call out —
‘My child, lift your head.
I offer you peace and freedom today,
Rise up from this hopeless bed.’
My body feels weak and weary,
but I must respond to the call,
So I lift my eyes and look ahead
and discover I’m not alone after all . . .
In the darkness, I can see others,
Some stumbling, some in a heap,
And all the while I hear the call
‘I am close to those who weep.’
Part 2
‘Rise up! I’m bringing you back to life.
I’m giving you back your breath.
I’m offering you hope in abundance,
I’m saving you from death.’
So I choose to move my rattling bones,
And slowly hold out my hand,
And I’m filled with a peace I’ve never known
which gives me the strength to stand.
Now I’m back up on my feet
Hope is rising again, once more.
And I take my first few steps
And I help others from off the floor.
I discover it was my Creator calling,
He’s cheering and leading me on.
He wants to show me the sunrise,
feel the breeze and hear the birdsong.
And for the rest of my days I’ll pursue my Creator,
Whose words are a lamp for my feet.
He’s given me breath so I thank him
And I can’t wait for the day that we’ll meet.
