How can we prevent slavery?

How can we prevent slavery?

It is hard to believe and understand, but slavery is a reality in our modern world, here and around the globe. Traffickers are active in every community, profiting from human misery and hiding their crimes from society. Lives trapped in domestic servitude, in forced labour, in sexual exploitation. Millions of victims, suffering and unknown to the rest of us.

Everyone can make a difference, and there are a variety of ways you can get involved. Here are just a few.

Become a GUARDIAN

For just £15 a month, you can become a Hope for Justice GUARDIAN and help create a world free from slavery. GUARDIANS fund our investigators and outreach teams to identify and rescue victims, and enable self-help groups to empower people to protect their own families from predatory traffickers. Not only that, GUARDIANS fund our specialist aftercare and restoration teams, as well as the professional support they need to live new lives in freedom.

Pledge your birthday

If you’ve got a birthday coming up, and you don’t want another pair of your auntie’s hand-knitted socks as a gift, try pledging your birthday to Hope for Justice. All you have to do is complete the form at hopeforjustice.org/pledgeyourbirthday, then tell all your friends about it. We’ll send you everything you need to know to create your very own fundraising page. It’s really simple and everyone will be able to donate to your birthday campaign online. All donations will go to towards freeing people from human trafficking and ending slavery.

Protect your business from modern slavery

Businesses know they’re responsible for their own employees – but what about in their supply chain? Unfortunately, businesses in all sectors could be vulnerable to human trafficking. Would you know what to look for, and how to respond to this hidden risk? Or if someone else was to find it first, would your business be prepared and protected? If the answer is no, becoming a member of Slave-Free Alliance is the answer. You’ll be joining a global movement that will give you access to the expertise and professional resources your business needs to be protected from the growing threat of modern slavery.

Learn to spot the signs of modern slavery

Awareness can save lives, so it’s important to know the signs of modern slavery. Victims are often hidden away, but it is still possible to encounter individuals or situations of concern. General indicators include an individual who is fearful of the police or authorities; someone who is unable to travel freely, and is picked up and dropped off at their work location by another person; or someone who appears to be in a relationship with a significantly older person without freedom to make their own choices. Form an Abolition Group

Our Abolition Groups are formed by passionate people, dedicated to making a difference, as part of a small group usually based out of a church, university or workplace.

They’re about making your passion for ending slavery a part of your everyday life. Through education you’ll make it hard for traffickers to hide their victims and their crimes. Through funding you’ll help us deliver life-changing programmes to men, women and children who have suffered brutal exploitation. And you’ll make an incredible difference.

It’s an extraordinary thing, to help set free another human being. I have sat with rescued victims, and looked in their eyes as they contemplate a new life in freedom. But I’ve also been undercover into brothels in Cambodia and seen rows of raked seating with young women sat there, no name nor even number, men just given a laser pointer to pick the one they want. Stripped of their humanity.
Hope for Justice has saved hundreds of victims of modern slavery, but there are still millions that need saving – and with your help, we’ll put an end to it.
