The Story Behind You: A Special Gift

The Story Behind You: A Special Gift

A warm and uplifting conversation about identity, faith, and helping children discover the light within them.

What does it mean for a child to know they are truly valued?

In You: A Special Gift, Deborah Lock explores that question through the story of a Little Lightbearer guiding others along a path. It touches on themes of faith, identity, and kindness in a way children can understand. The book offers reassurance in a world that can sometimes feel confusing.

A simple idea, but one that shapes how a child sees themselves.

We spoke with Deborah Lock about the inspiration behind the story, the message she hopes children will carry, and why it matters that every child knows they are a gift.

What sparked the story?

I enjoy walking through woodlands, finding waterfalls, admiring views and in the surroundings of nature find time to reflect on Jesus’ teachings and words, especially the ‘I am’ sayings in the Gospel of John. Each year, I’m also involved in leading a light party with families and we always sing the song, ‘This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine’, very enthusiastically. We celebrate Jesus as the light of the world and think about how we can be bearers of that light into the lives of those around us.

"Everyone carries a light within them that brightens the lives of those around them."

How do you write about identity and self-worth in a way that connects with children?

In creating the fictional character of the Little Lightbearer full of determination to do his best and full of hope that reminded me of many of the young children that I’ve had the delight to meet, I aimed to create a relatable and empowering persona for young readers to connect with. Taking the lead and helping others takes courage and bravery, and often obstacles come up that can knock confidence that requires values of perseverance and thoughtfulness to overcome. The Little Lightbearer discovers that he is not alone, but supported, truly valued for the unique light he brings, and encouraged to continue doing his best.

What do you hope a child feels when they close the book?

Encouraged to know that they are special to those who know them and that they bring joy and a unique light to others. Even though they may seem small, they are valued and have a super-power knowing that a smile, a caring word, or any small act of kindness can make a huge difference to someone’s life. Reassured that they are not alone, and for those who are Christians know that Jesus loves them unconditionally and walks with them and ready to carry and lead them through any difficulty. Inspired to be lightbearers too (carrying Jesus light within them) in their everyday lives and to everyone they meet.

Is there a moment in the book that feels especially meaningful to you?

The encouraging and reassuring words of the man who glowed (representing Jesus Christ). I imagined what Jesus, or any parent or carer, would lovingly say to children to let them know that they are special, and that their love and kindnesses are appreciated and valued, and also that they don’t have to face the world alone but are supported and can go to others when they need help. Also that they are needed, and although the people around them may change throughout their lives, perhaps with new schools, new homes and new experiences, they will continue to be special and valued by others in their uniqueness.

"Just by existing, you are a gift to those around you."

What would you say to a child who doesn’t yet believe they are a special gift?

A gift is freely given – and just you existing is a gift to those around you. Special is a uniqueness that comes from just being you. Although this world is full of people, there’s no one else like you and what you bring to others around you is valued. We all have a special gift within us too. Everyone including you carries a light within them that brightens the lives of those around them. How bright that light shines with love and kindness and thoughtfulness towards others is up to you? But that light is there – a special gift - and it’s ready to shine as brightly as you would like. Some days you may not feel it glowing as much, but that’s ok as on those days lean on other people’s light and kindness towards you. Other days you’ll be glowing brightly again. However you shine, dim days or bright days, you are special and valued for the gift you are.
