A New Editor for Theology Journal
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Professor George Pattison as the new editor of Theology, SPCK’s long-standing peer-reviewed journal of Christian thought. After fourteen years of dedicated editorial service, the Revd Professor Robin Gill will be stepping down due to ill health. Professor Pattison will officially begin in September 2025, with his first issue appearing in January 2026.
We are deeply grateful for the faithful editorial leadership of Professor Robin Gill, whose fourteen-year tenure helped shape Theology’s scholarly voice for a new generation. His work continues the legacy of influential editors, including the the Revd Dr John Drury, who helped establish Theology’s distinctive voice in the late twentieth century.
This editorial transition marks not just a change in leadership, but the continuation of a remarkable legacy in Christian publishing.
About the New Editor: George Pattison
Professor Pattison is an Anglican priest and one of the UK’s most widely respected theologians. After ten years as Dean of Chapel at King's College, Cambridge, his career has included academic posts in Denmark, as well as at Oxford and Glasgow Universities.
Known for his work on Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Dostoevsky, as well as the place of faith in modern secular society, Pattison’s writing explores the intersection of religious belief, cultural change, and existential experience. His appointment signals an exciting future for Theology, as it continues to publish essays that speak to both tradition and contemporary theological concerns.
A Century of Peer-Reviewed Theological Scholarship
Founded in July 1920 by Gordon Selwyn, Theology emerged in the wake of the First World War as a much-needed space for thoughtful theological reflection, dialogue, and hope. Its original mission was to represent Anglican Liberal Catholic theology, offering a distinct voice from more Reformed or Evangelical journals such as The Expository Times.
Since its founding, Theology has played an influential role in the English-speaking theological world. The journal has published works by prominent figures such as C.S. Lewis, Grace Jantzen, Maurice Wiles, Mary Warnock, and Karl Barth, as well as celebrated poets and public intellectuals. It has continually bridged the gap between academic theology and the wider church, fostering conversation that is both intellectually rigorous and spiritually grounded.
Notable past editors include Alec Vidler (1939–1964), Gordon Dunstan (1965–1975), and Bill Jacob (1998–2008). In more recent decades, editors such as Ann Loades, Peter Coleman, and Robin Gill have each shaped the journal’s direction and ensured its continued relevance to scholars, clergy, and lay readers.
Theology has been published by SPCK since its inception and, since 2010, in partnership with Sage Publications—expanding its global reach and digital accessibility.
