The great stories of the Old and New Testaments are best understood in the contexts in which they were shaped: contexts which help sift storytelling and history, poetry and prose, chronicle and commentary.

Trevor Dennis is an academic theologian with a gift for storytelling.

In this highly acclaimed Bible retelling, he goes back to the roots of the biblical writings, bringing fresh insights into the familiar stories in his novelistic retelling. His aim to bring the stories of the Bible alive is achieved in a book which brims with verve, humour and originality, in a style that will appeal to readers of all ages.

The book is aimed at children aged 8-10 who are already familiar with Biblical stories but are ready to discover more. As well as retelling the stories Trevor Dennis encourages children to understand the origins of the ancient text in the Bible.
Trevor Dennis, one-time school chaplain, Old Testament Studies tutor at Salisbury and Wells Theological College, and finally Canon Chancellor and Vice Dean at Chester Cathedral, retired in 2010, but continues to teach and to write. He has a passion for sharing contemporary biblical scholarship with a wider audience (including children: he published a children's Bible in 2003), and his work in the area of preaching through storytelling or poetry, undertaken since the early 1980s and represented in six collections published by SPCK, has been ground-breaking.

'Exceptional in its range, from the mysterious and poetic to the down-to-earth and funny . . . [an] admirably lucid introduction . . . Trevor Dennis's skill as a storyteller is undeniable.'

- Church Times

'This extensive re-presentation of the biblical literature is to be welcomed . . . the author's theological involvement with the material shines through the collection, creating new insights into some of the stories.'
